What’s good for the reefs is good for you – Sunscreen that uses environmentally friendly ingredients
Unlike conventional chemical sunscreens that are harmful to humans and marine life, All Good mineral sunscreen products are made with the active ingredient, zinc oxide. Zinc oxide is a topical, non-nanoparticle, mineral-based ingredient that sits on top of your skin and won’t absorb into your body; it is one of only two ingredients that has been FDA-approved for general recognition of safety and effectiveness (GRASE)*. All of our All Good reef-friendly suncare products meet broad-spectrum FDA standards and reef safe criteria. Our ingredients do not include chemical UV absorbers, parabens or harmful additives (and eespecially no octinoxate, oxybenzone, and the other chemicals in the “Awful Eight”).

Why is Reef-Safe Sunscreen Important?
Coral reefs are more than just a pretty face. They support an incredible underwater ecosystem and their very existence defends our coastlines against the worst effects of storms and hurricanes. Nature knows what’s up. Humans, on the other hand, do not. Climate change and human impact (like overfishing and chemical runoff) have accelerated coral bleaching, which leads to coral death. And more than 14,000 tons of sunscreen products reach and damage our coral reefs each year. That just doesn’t sit well with us.
What is Oxybenzone? (And Why We’ll Never Put It In Your Sunscreen).
Oxybenzone is a chemical compound that is the active ingredient in most over-the-counter sunscreens and other personal care and skincare products. It’s a UV-ray blocker that is highly effective in slowing the absorption of harmful UVA and UVB rays by human skin. However, Oxybenzone contributes to coral bleaching because it is “a skeletal endocrine disruptor”. This inhibits their ability to reproduce healthily and causes physical deformities that make them even more susceptible to coral bleaching — and even death.
8 Harmful Chemicals Found in Most Sunscreens (But Never in Ours)
The compounds in these ingredients, preservatives, and additives are toxic to humans and coral reefs. If any one of these ingredients is listed in a sunscreen, it is NOT considered reef safe, reef friendly, or – you guessed it – safe for you.
- Oxybenzone
- Octinoxate
- Octocrylene
- PABA (Amino-benzoic Acid)
- Enzacamene
