As a passionate surfer who’s faced these challenges firsthand, I understand the importance of a solid skincare routine. So, welcome to your go-to guide!
3 Reasons Why Skincare Is a Must for Surfers
In recent years, skincare routines and overall skin health have been hot topics all over social media, but why is this especially important for surfers?
Sun Protection
As surfers, we spend a great deal of our free time outdoors in the ocean and on the beach. Even if you don’t live in the tropics, the combination of water reflection and intense UV radiation from the sun puts surfers at a much higher risk for accelerated skin aging, sunburns, and potential skin cancer. This is why using sun protection, which is at least SPF 30 or higher, is essential to maintain healthy skin.
Hydration and Moisture
Spending hours in the sun and saltwater can wreak havoc on your skin’s moisture levels. The saltwater depletes essential oils from our skin, while the wind exacerbates moisture loss. Both of these combined can cause the skin to be extremely dry and brittle. That’s why simply applying sunscreen before hitting the waves isn’t enough to hydrate the skin. It’s vital to use moisturizing creams or oils post-surf to ensure your skin stays healthy and hydrated.
Protection Against Skin Irritation
Surfers face a multitude of environmental factors that can compromise skin health. Exposure to the sun, saltwater, wind, and sand on a regular basis can lead to irritation, as well as sunburns and dryness. Additionally, saltwater often contains bacteria, increasing the risk of skin infections. While sunscreen is crucial, it doesn’t shield the skin against pollutants and bacteria. That’s why a thorough skincare routine post-surf is essential to keep our skin healthy and happy.
How to Take Care of Your Skin as a Surfer?
Now that you understand why skincare is non-negotiable, let’s dive into the how:
Sun Shield
On your journey to a healthier skin, sunscreen is your ally, whether on land or catching waves. For surfers, opting for an SPF 30+ sunscreen ensures thorough protection, even during those marathon surf sessions. Living in a place with a higher UV index? Consider using zinc-based sunscreen, especially on sensitive areas like your face. Zinc is a very thick sunscreen especially intended for water sports, making sure it stays on your skin for several hours even in the water. Remember to apply sunscreen at least 20 minutes before hitting the waves, allowing it to absorb properly into your skin.
Rinse and Refresh
After shredding those waves, it’s time to rinse off the saltwater and sand. Treat your skin to a refreshing wash with a moisturizing face and body cleanser in the shower. This is to make sure you get rid of all the bacteria and pollutants that your skin might have been in contact with while surfing. Trust me, your skin will thank you for it later.
Hydration Boost
Last but certainly not least, give your skin the hydration it craves with a nourishing moisturizer or oil. These products will give your skin the much-needed hydration, enforcing your skin’s barrier against dryness and cracking.
Ride the Waves with Confidence!
Now armed with the knowledge and tools to care for your skin, it’s time to hit the waves with confidence. Wave goodbye to dry skin and enjoy every surf session knowing that your skin is protected and nourished. Surf’s up!
